thinking abt that scene in “the western air temple” where sokka just picks up toph like she weighs nothing and she instinctively curls into him…. how long did he carry her around for until her feet healed…. thinking abt toph wanting sokka to save her in “the serpent’s pass” bc she likes the thought of being rescued as long as it’s by ~~someone who respects her & sees her humanity~~ sokka….. thinking abt the way ppl see toph and assume she doesn’t need emotional support or validation bc she is so sure of herself, but sokka never hesitates to tell her how cool he thinks she is, and it’s clear she basks in his praise every time…… how sokka gives her a piece of meteorite that he actively put aside while making his space sword as a gift for her and it immediately becomes her most treasured possession…. thinking abt sokka shielding toph with his body while airships crash around them….. the way she has complete faith in sokka even when they both think they’re about to die…. thinking abt toph & sokka agreeing that feelings are for losers as they open up to each other about their deepest vulnerabilities on a cliffside…… the way toph initially found it so difficult to understand why helping someone can be a sign of love & respect bc she was so used to being coddled & stifled & demeaned by her abusive, ableist family, but found a new, better, truer family who showed her that there is strength in vulnerability & trust & letting someone help you—in letting yourself be loved.

Something really personal but here’s the way I ship them.

after BOTFA, everyone survived AU

Sorry I’m just, really bad at writing conversations🤦‍♀️. Some of the scripts I borrowed directly from BOTFA. Everything is good up until this point and yes they’re still BFFs ~~and giving me old-married-couple vibe already~~.

PERSONALLY, I think even as a couple, neither Thorin or Bilbo is the type that is willing to give up their own way of living to live with the other (at least not right now).

Thorin had been forced out of Erebor at a young age and just recovered his long-lost home. There’s a LONG way ahead restoring Erebor and bringing back his people. He will stumble, he will have doubts, he will question himself things like Am I really ready and Will I be a good king… But he won’t turn away, because he is Thorin son of Durin.

For Bilbo, the journey did change him, still he remains a hobbit at heart and values home above gold and glory. He misses the peaceful life and comfort he used to have though he knows it’ll never be the same, because HE is not the same hobbit anymore. He helped the dwarves taking back Erebor, now he longs for his own home.

(All of these are mere personal interpretations😇)

So since Thorin will not live in Shire and Bilbo won’t live in Erebor for their entire life, the most-likely situations I’d imagine are these…

There will be a point where Fili can somewhat take on the responsibilities of ruling Erebor. Thorin might have some kingly vacation (specifically, working on legislations, approving orders and proclamations at night and travel among the day) and visit Shire sometime.

I realized not a lot of ppl talk about the aging problem, so I tried to talk about it🧌. Hobbits have lifespans similar to Men but Dwarves’ are usually 3 times longer if I recall correctly.

ID: a poem that can be read three ways, the left side is labeled Alive, the right side is labeled Dead. Reading only Alive gives:

He walks through the trees, the sun sifting through his beard. Here I am, just a kid, a father with his favourite child. He looks so much like a dad. Here we are: birds flying; a pulsing river; a ravenous picnic; and that smile, a mouth wide open, his child, newly awakened, wrapped around his neck like rosary beads clinging to his body. I loved him long before I heard of his body failing, and I held him so. Trusting that my love is enough.

Reading only Dead gives:

My dreams every night turn to spiders that all have his face. There is a campfire burning out, and me, the white dust of only ash in my hands. In the real world, standing next to his bed again– he doesn’t look like a body about to burn to pieces. Dead silence– no voice, only an echo not quite gone yet. The pills are down his throath, the morphine into his stomach, his body only for the disease, the wound across his back becomes filled with blood, and me, standing next to the body. Grief has hands twisted, tightening in prayer: the last breath like a final amen. I could speak the prayer a thousand ways– still, God will answer for only God, never for the living.

And reading them both together gives:

Thank you for writing this and documenting everything! Two years later I still think about this every time I see his name, and am frustrated by how many folks don’t seem aware of the allegations or dismiss them out of hand. I very much agree that these accounts establish a disturbing pattern of 50+ year-old global celebrity exploiting his 17-20 year-old fans (and using their own personal stories of trauma to do so).

I particularly appreciated you bringing up how “nearly five other people (mostly young trans masculine fans) have come out and said that Darnielle has had similar interactions with them.” That combined with the troubling detail from one person that “there was an overwhelming femininity and focus on v feminine things about me that were also the focus of these conversations …. it made me very uncomfortable”, plus other accounts of Darnielle getting “overly touchy” with underage fans ….. it all sets off serious alarm bells for me. Makes me wonder if there are more young folks out there with stories to share who saw the intense MG fandom backlash and decided not to come forward. Thank you again for taking this so seriously and spreading the word.

It’s 2023 now and I’m still thinking about John Darnielle (50s) exploiting his young queer fans (~19-21) by manipulating them into intense, secretive emotional support relationships , and bringing back this post to update links.

The original fan who spoke out deleted his tumblr (melodrama420) after receiving harassment from TMG fans, so the first link in Ritchie-Shatz article is now broken. You can still read his original post recorded on the Web Archive (with text screencaps where Darnielle admits to crossing boundaries), as well as his follow-up posts sharing other young, mostly trans masc fans’ stories about Darnielle manipulating them, and witnessing him getting “overly touchy” with an underage fan.

An important quote I want to highlight from melodrama420:

“all bad experiences have been almost exclusively with young transmasc fans, there is something very, very wrong here”

I used to be kinda inspired by all the queer and trans people singing their hearts out to This Year every January, but now it makes me angry. Thinking of all the young trans masc fans who idolized him, and who he exploited and threw away when he couldn’t keep pretending his actions weren’t hurting them. You don’t have to physically assault a person to fuck with their head, and from what Darnielle’s own texts suggest, he’s very aware of what he’s done. And most fans have probably never even heard about these accounts!

I hope that wherever those former-fans are now, online or off, that they could find some peace with how Darnielle and his fanbase treated them. And I hope all TMG fans can understand, that even if they helped you survive through hard times, ultimately THAT WAS YOU. You don’t need him. And no music or fan community is worth what he puts his fan “friends” through.

DASHBOARD UNFUCKER V1.0

as 90% of desktop users have probably found out, today @staff released an update that for some insane reason COMPLETELY remodels the dashboard to replicate twitter's. this is of course in the wake of numerous other thoroughly hated changes and a continued refusal to fix any of the site's actual problems, half of which stem directly from site management.

HOWEVER, thanks to the power of jQuery, i was able to throw together a userscript that remodels the dashboard back to its original look almost perfectly.

here is my dashboard right now, with the script active:

it's hardly perfect; i had trouble making it force reload to the fixed layout when switching between other pages and the dashboard, and it currently only fixes just the dashboard. it's also completely untested on browsers other than firefox, and chances are it looks a bit screwy on ultrawide monitors. but for now at least, it's a good fix.

the unfucker is a tampermonkey userscript. all you have to do to use it is install the tampermonkey extension, hit "create new script", and replace the default code on the page with the script (link here) and save it.

I have. Look at me. I’m on the destiel website. I was there gandalf. The supernatural fandom, though sprawling and vast, has literally nothing on what was going on with the stuckies in our hayday. Look me in my eyes. It has nothing on us. Destiel has some good stuff no doubt ive read some good stuff in there this isnt a knock but this is like comparing a commuters bicycle to a harley davidson motorcycle. There is not a single destiel fic that measures up to what was going on back then. Not a single one.
